Normal for when, against what, for whom

When a report says normal, it sounds like the end of a question. Sometimes it is the beginning of one.

An injured brain region can measure normal in size for a short window, because early swelling pushes it up before later shrinkage pulls it down. Catch it at the wrong moment and normal is exactly what you will see.

Normal is also only as good as what you compared against. A structure at the bottom of the reference range is technically within normal, yet it may sit far below where that particular person used to be.

So I try to be careful with the word. Normal for when. Normal against what. Normal for whom.

A clean report is a real and reassuring thing when it has been earned. It is a false comfort when normal simply means nobody measured hard enough to find the change.

The honest version of normal always carries its conditions with it.
